OCTOBER 2026
Have you ever noticed how two people can experience the same situation and describe it completely differently?
One may say, “I have no choice.” Another may say, “I haven’t found the right option yet.”
The situation may be similar. But the language is different — and often, so is the way each person sees what is possible.
This is where Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) offers an interesting perspective in coaching.
In a coaching conversation, language can often provide clues to how a person is viewing a situation.
Statements such as:
may reflect assumptions, beliefs or patterns that are influencing the person’s choices.
A coach does not simply correct these statements or provide an answer. Instead, through curiosity and thoughtful questioning, the coach helps the individual explore what lies beneath the words.
Questions such as:
“What makes you believe this is always true?”
“What else could be possible?”
“What might change if you looked at this differently?”
can sometimes open up a completely new perspective.
NLP explores the relationship between our thoughts, language, experiences and behavioural patterns.
Some NLP-inspired approaches can support coaching by helping a coach become more attentive to:
The purpose, however, is not for the coach to interpret or diagnose.
The client remains at the centre of discovery.
The coach listens.
The coach notices.
The coach asks.
And through that process, greater awareness can begin to emerge.
There is another important dimension to coaching.
Before we can deeply listen to another person, we also need to become aware of our own assumptions, reactions and internal dialogue.
Are we truly listening — or preparing our response?
Are we curious — or looking for the answer we think the other person needs?
Learning to coach is therefore not only about acquiring tools and techniques. It is also a journey of self-awareness and self-transformation.
And that is at the heart of DeeKay Excellence:
This month, DeeKay Excellence begins a new cohort of its ICF Coach Certification Program with Self-Transformation.
The programme is designed to develop coaching competencies while also helping participants become more aware of how they listen, communicate, lead and support others.
Because becoming a better coach often begins with becoming more aware of yourself.
If you are exploring professional coaching or looking to deepen the way you lead and engage with people, this could be the beginning of that journey.
